Corrosion of the carbon steel reinforcing bars (rebars) is a worldwide problem. The corrosion product ("rust") occupies a greater volume than the original steel bar and this creates a pressure which causes cracking and subsequent spalling (the flaking off or deterioration) of the surrounding concrete. Re-Bar, unless it is encased completely in the New Green Plastic that all specifications require on all road and bridge construction, will rust and Expand causing whatever it is in to split if it is below or above ground. I think many of you have seen bare steel pins split 4 inch tombstones apart. In all specifications where Re-Bar is used it must clear all dirt a minimum of 3 inches to help prevent rust and Expansion. Be very careful in how it is used. If it is closer to dirt than 3 inches, it will pick up moisture and travel the full length of the stick just like a wick. Thanks to Jack Briles for providing this information. |
